Everybody calls the employee indispensable. Then the employee takes a week off and the business stops making decisions.
That is not a compliment. It is an operating report.
The person knows which customer exception is safe, which supplier will answer, where the real file lives, how to repair the schedule, and what the owner meant last time. The company has rewarded rescue so consistently that normal work now requires a hero.
Do not punish the person who kept the business moving. Stop forcing them to carry knowledge, access, authority, and escalation that should belong to the company.
Key-person dependency exists when an important outcome cannot continue through a realistic absence. The repair is not a larger procedure manual. It is a tested transfer of knowledge, authority, access, relationships, and exception handling.
