A fractional leader takes responsibility for an agreed business function on a part-time basis. The role may cover finance, operations, marketing, sales, or another defined area.
Agree their authority, working time, team responsibilities, and what they can approve. Part-time hours need a clear handover and escalation arrangement.
When to hire
Consider a fractional leader when a function needs experienced leadership but a full-time appointment does not fit the current requirement.
Check availability, relevant experience, and capacity. Agree the work needed now and how responsibilities will transfer if you later make a full-time hire.
What to settle before the engagement
A title alone will not resolve conflicting instructions, withheld approvals, or insufficient resources. Confirm what the person is allowed to change.
